Tapered Mortise and Tenon Bit and Template
Tapered Mortise and Tenon Bit and Template
The Double Tapered Mortise and Tenon Template was inspired by Brian Boggs, founder of Brian Boggs Chairmakers and Boggsbench. com . It is specifically designed with chairmaking in mind but after experimenting with this joint, it has many potential furniture applications beyond chairs. It creates an incredibly strong yet compact joint that can be cut out of 8/4 stock and assembled without the need for clamps.
The Tapered Mortise and Tenon Router Bit is made by a company close to us here in Oregon, Bits&Bits. While tapered spiral carbide bits and end mills are available, we found them difficult to source in the size and angle we were looking for. In collaboration with Bits&Bits, we developed this purpose-built tapered joinery router bit. It has a 1/2” shank that tapers to 3/8” over a 1-1/4” cut length. It is a 3-flute spiral up-cut bit and coated with Astra HP. Beyond looking cool, the coating has some distinct advantages for the lifespan and cut quality of the bit. The Tapered Mortise and Tenon Bit can be used with any of our essential M&T or Segmented M&T templates, in addition the Double Tapered Mortise and Tenon Template can be used to cut non-tapered joints by using our conventional bits and methods on the PantoRouter®
